Functional Medicine

What is Functional Medicine and how is it different than Naturopathic Medicine?

The Institute of Functional Medicine was established in 1991 by Dr. and Mrs. Jeffery Bland.  He was the first member of the Board of Trustees of Bastyr University, offering graduate and undergraduate degrees in natural medicine.

Dr. Bland was involved with Bastyr University,  in Seattle, Washington before the development of functional medicine.  It is also known that the Institute of Functional Medicine has many Naturopathic Doctors on their staff holding positions such as educators, curriculum creation, and even on the board of directors.

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that emphasizes prevention and the self-healing process through the use of natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) blend centuries-old knowledge and a philosophy that nature is the most effective healer with current research on health and human systems.

The philosophy and the therapies of naturopathic medicine, which have their origins in  the traditional medicines of the world, first became a distinct profession in Germany in the mid-1800s.  Dr. Benedict Lust, MD, brought naturopathy to America in 1896,and established the first naturopathic college, in New Jersey called Yungborn Health Institute.

The foundation of naturopathic medical practice

  •  Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in humans. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate this inherent self-healing process.
  •  The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
  •  Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:
    • Utilize methods and substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat symptoms.
    • Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms
    • Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ sin the self-healing process
  •  Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health.
  • Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social and spiritual factors.
  •  Naturopathic physicians emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity, and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness

What are the similarities? And differences?

As you can tell, the two fields of medicine are similar in many ways including the incorporation of evidence-based medicine, patient centered care, a whole person approach, and treating the cause rather than just the symptoms.

I believe that there has been a demand for holistic, patient-centered care that has lead MDs and DOs to further their education with “functional medicine” to broaden their scope of practice and incorporate nutrition and natural therapies.  All of which are part of the curriculum of accredited naturopathic medical programs.

Once MD’s and DO’s are indoctrinated into the medical field it is very difficult to get by the legalities involved with Big Pharma and the Insurance Companies to practice “out-side the box” by using Functional Medicine. The MDs and DOs obtain functional medical education after graduation and then  have to make a choice between the two practices or can no longer be covered by insurance unless using pharmaceuticals and “medical approaches”.  NDs are taught this natural approach throughout their entire training and are not recognized by Insurance companies because they do not use pharmaceuticals but practice “functional medicine”only. (the healing power of nature). This principle is what sets NDs apart.  NDs trust in and support the bodies’ innate ability to heal itself.  As naturopathic doctors, we simply facilitate this healing ability by removing obstacles to cure and give the body what it needs.

While both fields aim to treat the cause, they have different ideas of the said cause. Whereas from a naturopathic standpoint, our education is based upon the evaluation of the body’s terrain.  Meaning lifestyle, environment, and constitutional aspects of the person.  I believe that the term Functional Medicine is another word for Naturopathic Medicine, but a way to make it sound more like a medical term with a more holistic approach. Avoiding the stigma of a health guru or medicine man or witch doctor at worst.  The meaning of medicine (use to be): a tonic or an herb, homeopathic that treats or prevents or alleviates the symptoms of disease. (working with the bodies own defenses). Today’s meaning of medicine (pharmaceutical drug): the learned profession that is mastered by graduate training in a medical school and that is devoted to preventing or alleviating or curing diseases and injuries.

When buying Silver there are a few things you must know. Not all silver is created equal. What you are getting is actual silver in these solutions. So it must be monitored correctly. Pioneers from out west would put silver coins in their water barrels to keep the water purified. Back before there was pasteurization, people would put a silver coin in their milk jugs to kill bacteria. Have you heard about the “blue man?” A few years back the news media got hold of this story and aired it nation-wide. It caused a lot of fear about using silver. First of all it is the only case ever recorded, Paul Karason revealed his skin turned blue as a side effect of consuming a silver compound for more than 10 years to treat a bad case of dermatitis on his face. He had self-medicated colloidal silver that he made himself by a suspending silver in a liquid base. Silver, which has antibacterial properties, was used to fight infection until the 1930s when penicillin was found to be more effective. The FDA banned it from being used in over-the-counter medicines in 1999 because of its link to argyria, which resulted when the silver would cause a person to turn blue. Another exaggeration of the media to stir up more controversy.

I have been in the Natural Health Industry for over 20 years and used silver for my self and my family as well as recommending it to others. There is some truth to the stories or should I say story we hear across the globe about the man turning blue using silver. If they had done a back-round check on Mr. Karason they might find that his mental health was a bit marred. He even admitted that he would make a strong solution of silver and applied it often to his skin because of dermatitis and a paranoia of germs. So the truth is you can make your own silver and you can over-use it. (you would have to use a lot to turn blue or even different shades of grey).  It has to do with the nanoparticles and the regulations that are followed by the EPA etc. Although the FDA will allow many harmful substances to be put to market with warnings but you will always have those who do dumb things. Silver nitrate is used to this day to prevent blindness from bacteria by dropping it into the eyes of newborns after delivery. Today after much research into the great benefits of using silver, it has led to the development of microscopic-sized silver particles that are less than 100 nanometers (a billionth of a meter) these are called nanoparticles which have strong antibacterial properties, non-toxic, and no side effects. Used for burns and wounds etc. Independent studies show it works against anti-microbial, pathogenic microbes, including Bacillus, anthrax, candida, tuberculosis, urinary, respiratory, skin, soft tissue, bone and joint and gastrointestinal infections, pink eye, sinus infections, bacterial blood infections, MRSA.

I have a personal testimony using it for a 10 year old with MRSA in which the antibiotic after using several rounds failed to work and seemed to aggravate it further. The MRSA cleared up after 2 weeks of ingesting Silver Shield and topically applying the Silver gel to the skin lesions.

At the Healthy Living Center we stock the NSP Silver Shield as well as Silver Gel. which are patented Patent No. 7,135,195. We also have medical grade Nebulizers which we sell strictly for using silver.  A mist is created to breath safely to help with colds, flus and many bronchial problems and sinus infections. This is also safe for children to use.

Silver Shield is not only safe but I recommend that every home should have it on hand  for prevention. As part of their patent, Silver Shield contains a concentration of 20 ppm of pure silver, providing 100 mcg of silver per serving. 18 ppm solvent solution recommended daily dose of 3 teaspoons. Remember: Mr. Karason ingested 16 oz of his homemade solution at 450 ppm  daily for 10 years. He used a solution that was 25 times as concentrated than our Silver. The difference is that Colloidal Silver has a stronger solution where the Solvent Silver is currently only available from 2 companies, NSP being one. Silver Shield is a “Solvent Silver”

Silver Shield comes in 3 sizes 4oz, 16oz and a 32oz family size.

The Truth About Insurance Companies

An Insurance Company is a practice or arrangement by which a company or government agency provides a guarantee of compensation for specified loss, damage, illness, or death in return for payment of a premium.

In the beginning, Exodus, when God created the world………. were there Insurance companies? Lets look back in time.

Pirates invented insurance by offering a written agreement to exchange treasure for injuries sustained in their work. The first methods of transferring or distributing risk in a monetary economy, were practiced by Chinese and Babylonian traders in the 2nd and 3rd millennia BC. The first marine insurance contract was started in Italy on October 23, 1334, the first written insurance contracts date back to February 13, 1343, in Pisa Italy. Furthermore, Italian traders spread the knowledge and use of insurance into Europe and The Mediterranean. In the fifteenth century, word policy for insurance contract became standardized.

Lloyd’s of London are credited with Inventing the modern concept of insurance. It is believed that the Knights Templar in the middle ages may also have dabbled in insuring agreements.

The first car insurance policy was created on February 1, 1898, by Travelers Insurance Company. It was sold to Dr. Truman J. Martin of Buffalo, NY, as a way to protect the gentleman’s finances in the case of an accident with a horse. In 1932 nonprofit organizations called Blue Cross or Blue Shield first offered group health plans. Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans were successful because they involved discounted contracts negotiated with doctors and hospitals. In return for promises of increased volume and prompt payment, providers gave discounts to the Blue Cross and Shield plans.

Government programs to cover health care costs began to expand during the 1950s and 1960s. in 1954 Disability benefits and social security coverage created Medicare and Medicaid programs. We still paid 75 percent of all of the health care costs. By 1995, we paid for half of the health care and the government paid the other half.

During the 1980’s and 1990’s, the cost of health care rose rapidly and the majority of employer-sponsored group insurance plans switched to “managed care plans.”

Wendell Potter said “I’m the former insurance industry insider now speaking out about how big for-profit insurers have hijacked our health care system and turned it into a giant ATM for Wall Street investors, and how the industry is using its massive wealth and influence to determine what is (and is not) included in the health care reform legislation members of Congress are now writing.

Although by most measures I had a great career in the insurance industry (four years at Humana and nearly 15 at CIGNA), in recent years I had grown increasingly uncomfortable serving as one of the industry’s top PR executives. In addition to my responsibilities at CIGNA, which included serving as the company’s chief spokesman to the media on all corporate and financial matters, I also served on a lot of trade association committees and industry-financed coalitions, many of which were essentially front groups for insurers.

So I was in a unique position to see not only how Wall Street analysts and investors influence decisions insurance company executives make but also how the industry has carried out behind-the-scenes PR and lobbying campaigns to kill or weaken any health care reform efforts that threatened insurers’ profitability.

I also have seen how the industry’s practices – especially those of the for-profit insurers that are under constant pressure from Wall Street to meet their profit expectations – have contributed to the tragedy of nearly 50 million people being uninsured as well as to the growing number of Americans who, because insurers now require them to pay thousands of dollars out of their own pockets before their coverage kicks in – are underinsured. An estimated 25 million of us now fall into that category.

What I saw happening over the past few years was a steady movement away from the concept of insurance and toward “individual responsibility,” a term used a lot by insurers and their ideological allies. This is playing out as a continuous shifting of the financial burden of health care costs away from insurers and employers and onto the backs of individuals. As a result, more and more sick people are not going to the doctor or picking up their prescriptions because of costs. If they are unfortunate enough to become seriously ill or injured, many people enrolled in these plans find themselves on the hook for such high medical bills that they are losing their homes to foreclosure or being forced into bankruptcy.” (To read more go to…/health insurance corruption)

Not to many systems have been established for the sole advantage of the people without a selfish motive. I want to remark on Mr. Potter’s statement that “more and more sick people are not going to the doctor or picking up their prescriptions because of costs.” As a Naturopath I see this as a good thing because I think too many people run to the doctor to often or take pharmaceuticals unnecessarily. Prevention is not what our system is set up for today all though they call it that. The word should be detection not prevention. My opinion is that “early detection” is one of the reasons why we have so much cancer today. Think about that for a minute, let’s use breast cancer as an example because it is one of the leading cancers today. Most breast cancers are slow growing cancers,  a woman may die from something else (such as old age) before she ever was aware of  breast cancer. Our system is set up to make you think that there is less people dying of cancer because of “early detection”. So what does this involve? Mammogram’s a minimum of 1 time a year for the average female over 40. What is a mammogram? If something shows up as a possible cancer they want to do a needle biopsy. I want to point out that when cancer cells are exposed to the air after a needle biopsy the cancer tends to spread faster. Radiation is another major cause of cancer. Injury to the breast can  cause the spreading of cancer. So lets squeeze those breasts and radiate them at least once a year and if you are a “high risk factor” lets do it 2-3 times per year. Prevention is key right? We need to be educated on what true prevention really is. There are many causes of cancer today. The most important preventive measure is to have a strong immune system. Vaccines weaken immune response. Anti-biotics damage gut health which is 80% of where our immune system is located. Eating glyphosate infected foods GMO’s etc. Polluting the air inside and outside our homes, water, stress, consuming pharmaceuticals drugs etc.

I have heard people say, “some day insurance companies will cover alternative medicine and more people will turn to it.” One of my prayers is that people like myself are never a part of this corrupt system. Not only is the system corrupt but it corrupts people  Example, if your insurance covered my services what is to keep me from raising my prices astronomically?  If they take that money and give it to me, you wouldn’t even feel the loss because they already put it aside for me in what they call your insurance policy.

Witchcraft By Another Name

Watchman Bible Study

I feel led to point out something important that most Christians do not know or realize. The understanding of this begins to reveal how the pharmaceutical companies are assisting in the fall of America and the world.

Many may not realize it, but through the attempts to adjust body chemistry through foreign drugs put into the system, we only cover up what is there to tell us something. And beyond that, it affects our minds and attitudes assisting in the lulling to complacency.

Galatians 5:19-21
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

That’s pretty serious, but what does…

There has been much interest lately over the discovery of the many benefits of an herb called the Hemp plant or often confused with a family member called the Marijuana plant. Just like any other herb there are many properties and uses of this single plant.  There has been much stigma in the US when we hear the name Hemp or Cannabis we think of the forbidden. From a personal stand I do not like “getting high” or do I promote it, but this is all we ever thought this plant had to offer. Please watch the you-tube clip provided at the bottom of this page with an open mind and from the perspective of someone living outside the US who know’s the medical benefits of this amazing super-herb.

CBD is one of more than 60 compounds unique to the Hemp plant and grouped under the umbrella term “cannabinoids.” Cannabidiol, are usually the most common cannabinoids in the plant and are therefore the most widely studied. CBD or Cannabidiol is derived from the flower or bud of the genus Cannabis and is 40 percent of cannabis extract. CBD does not appear to have any intoxicating effects such as those caused by THC. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)  is the main psychoactive component of the marijuana plant. In other words, THC is the primary agent responsible for creating the “high” feeling associated with marijuana use. This compound works by imitating the effects of anandamide which is a neurotransmitter produced naturally by the human body to help regulate sleeping and eating habits, as well as the perception of pain. CBD in cannabis  does not have any psychoactive effects “getting a high” such as those caused by THC in marijuana.

THC and CBD are two types of cannabinoids found naturally in the resin of the marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa. CBD has the same chemical formula as THC, but the atoms are arranged differently. Both of these substances interact with the cannabinoid receptors found in the human body, but the types of effects brought about by these compounds couldn’t be more different. For this reason, CBD is more often used as a medical treatment than THC. THC causes euphoria by binding to special CB1 and CB2 nerve receptors in the brain. CBD does not bind to these receptors, so CBD does not give you the same effects as THC. Given the increasing popularity of medical marijuana, breeders are currently creating strains with higher CBD to THC ratios to minimize the psychoactive side effects.

CBD may be beneficial in treating epilepsy, anti-anxiety, the spreading of cancer, psychotic symptoms, convulsions and nausea and inflammation. CBD may also prove to have therapeutic uses in a number of conditions involving oxidative stress, including Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Not all Hemp is created equal. Just as different strains of hemp absorb different concentrations of beneficial minerals, like iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium, different strains of Hemp absorb different levels of toxic chemicals more than others.  Because the molecules in toxic heavy metals closely resemble beneficial minerals the body does not recognise them as toxins and stores them instead of eliminating them. THC and CBD in hemp are found mainly in the sticky resin that is extracted from the female buds of Cannabis. Growing conditions are  very important  in determining the correct ratios of CBD and THC. The most crudely extracted CBD paste taken from “industrial hemp” leaves is truly an inferior starter material for formulating CBD rich oil products. The problem is that companies are  not transparent enough concerning their product labels and online descriptions. CBD from China has been flagged as potentially dangerous because a lot of their hemp is grown in fields irrigated by run-off from local mines.  In recent years the FDA rounded up at least 8 online companies claiming to sell CBD oil which was proved to have no CBD in it at all! Look for companies you can actually talk to and don’t be afraid to ask questions until you get all the answers you need. Don’t be fooled by media hype.

At the Healthy Living Center we order Pure CBD Oil’s from a company who supply us products that have less than .3% THC by law and they are processed in a Denver Environmental Health Department compliant facility, for safety and purity. Generally, this oil is an extract from the varieties of cannabis plants that have CBD occurring naturally in large amounts and THC in low amounts. To ensure a high concentration of CBD in the oil, a specialized process is used to extract the compound. The oil contains other compounds like terpenes, omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, chlorophyll, vitamins, and phytocannabinoids like cannabigerol, cannabichromene, cannabidivarian, and cannabinol. When you have all of the cannabinoids together in the oil, that is referred to as Full Spectrum Oil.

CBD Dosage: everyone will react differently to varying dosages. The dosage of CBD differs for each person, it is best to start small and gradually increase until you experience the desired result or use the amount advised by your health practitioner.

Insulin Resistance

Metabolism Chart

What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin is a hormone that facilitates the transport of blood sugar (glucose) from the blood into the cells for use as fuel. The pancreas secrets insulin into the blood. When you are insulin resistant IR, the normal amount of insulin is not sufficient to move glucose into the cells. To compromise, the pancreas secrets insulin in ever-increasing amounts to maintain adequate blood sugar into the cells. Genetic factors usually contribute to Insulin resistance. But the foods we eat are directly responsible. Weight loss and exercise are the best cures for IR.
Why is it important to understand IR? It can lead to diabetes, heart disease and weight gain.

Understanding the glycemic Index is one of the best tools for weight loss. It measures how quickly foods break down into sugar in your bloodstream. High glycemic foods turn into blood sugar very quickly. Starchy food like potatoes are a good example, it is processed like pure sugar

The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring how much of a rise in circulating blood sugar a carbohydrate triggers–the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. So a low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will trigger a dramatic spike.

The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a fuller picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn’t tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. You need to know both things to understand a food’s effect on blood sugar.

Keeping it under 10 is the best choice. No more than 10-20 “Loads” per item, anything over a 20 could cause a blood sugar insulin spike.

Understanding your Burn Rate and Metabolic Type is also very important. Did you know you can determine your MT by understanding your Personality and Genetic Body Type and the way you respond to certain foods etc.

Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal Fatigue

Do you have trouble waking up in the morning after you seemingly slept all night? Have you had a chronic respiratory infection that left you listless and exhausted? Do you feel like you need a cup of coffee before you can think straight?

You have come to the right place. I have been studying Adrenal Fatigue for many years and after working with hundreds of Clients have come to some of my own conclusions. I believe Adrenal Fatigue is behind all Auto-Immune Diseases and let me explain why.

Adrenal function plays an important role in moderating the inflammatory processes characteristic of autoimmune reactions. In autoimmune processes, the white blood cells of the immune system attack one or more parts of the body as if their tissue cells were intruders. This creates inflammation in those tissues, with effects that can range from mild to life-threatening autoimmune disease.

Your adrenal glands produce the hormone cortisol, which is the most powerful anti-inflammatory substance in your body. However, in autoimmune disease, cortisol levels are inadequate for the degree of reaction taking place in the tissues being attacked. This is one of the reasons why strong corticosteroids (prednisone, prednisolone, etc.) are used with all diseases involving inflammatory processes, including autoimmune diseases. These drugs imitate the anti-inflammatory effects of cortisol.
